Plan Your Packing Process Ahead

Before you pack a single item, make sure you have the right packing supplies to get the job done.

Seal Boxes Tightly With Packing Tape

By sealing your boxes tight with packing tape, you’ll help prevent dust from entering while in storage or during move-in and move-out.

Label Boxes for Proper Identification

Labeled boxes can better prevent movers from damaging sensitive or breakable items such as glassware and dishes during transit. You’ll also be able to load and unload your moving truck and storage unit more efficiently.

Dismantle Furniture

Dismantling your furniture into movable pieces helps make move-in more efficient and maximizes space inside your storage unit.

Use Drawer Space for Additional Packing

These spaces are ideal for smaller or foldable items such as towels or collectibles. Ensure drawer space is secure and use newsprint to tightly pack margins for breakable items.

Wipe Down and Dry Off Metal Items Before Storing

This will help minimize the risk of rust or additional wear and tear, especially if you plan to store these metal items long term.

Put Clothing on Hangers

Hanging your clothes will save you hours of time ironing the wrinkles out of your clothes post-storage.

Lay Books Flat in Boxes

This is done in order to protect the spines and prevent dust from creeping within the pages. Create further protection by adding packing paper within the margins.

Pad Mirrors, Glassware, and Dishes With Plenty of Paper

Wrap each individual glass with paper and make sure each surrounding area of the box is layered with paper, including the top and bottom. Plates are best stacked on the edge.

What household items can I keep in my storage unit?

Tons of things! Some items commonly kept in our self storage units include couches, mattresses, bed frames, appliances, and boxes of miscellaneous items such as clothing or dishes. Renting residential storage can be hugely valuable during a move, while downsizing, or at any other point where you need more space.

What am I not allowed to keep in my storage unit?
